Famous Food in Aizawl

Aizawl is the capital of the state of Mizoram located in India. Different infamous street foods served as local dishes will make your mouth water.

1. Bai

This is an infamous Mizo dish. Bai is made up of steamed vegetables along with pork, spinach and bamboo shoot, and spiced with local herbs. It should be noted that it is mostly prepared with pork sauce (made out of pork and mustard), but can also be prepared with butter as well to make a vegetarian dish. Bai is one of the most easily available dishes in Aizawl. This dish is a delicious combination of several herbs cooked with string beans and edible ferns.

This dish is made of soft, tender meat that falls off the bone. It is one of the Mizoram’s favorite smoked pork dish. Every North Eastern state has a different way of cooking pork, but this Mizo dish will make you lick your fingers. It is made with earthy flavors of chilies, local herbs and fresh leafy greens that complement the pork.

3. Koat Pitha

Koat Pitha comprises of deep-fried fritters along with rice flour and banana that is quite similar to the Unni appam in Kerala but with the addition of fish.  It has a very crispy and juicy outer and a soft inner layer. It’s the best dish to pair with Zu, the Mizo chai. Mizoram’s famous Koat Pitha is a frittered recipe, that is easy-to-make and can be prepared at home without putting in many efforts. It is made with the goodness of rice flour, banana, powdered jaggery, and oil. This dish is a perfect snack recipe that one person should try.

4. Sanpiau

If you are a street food fan, then you cannot miss this infamous Mizo snack of Sanpiau. It is cooked with rice porridge and is plated up with fresh coriander paste, spring onions, crushed black pepper, fish sauce, and finely powdered rice that tastes really very delicious.

Misa Mash Poora is the best way to treat yourself when in Aizawl. This dish is cooked with shrimps, onions, coriander, peppercorns and lime juice. Its bold flavors will make every foodie’s mouth water. Misa Mach Poora is a popular dish from the northeast cuisine which is very easy and simple to prepare with just a few ingredients available at the home. Grilled shrimps make for an awesomely delicious and luscious dinner; irresistibly marinated with subtle flavors, ready to be eaten with a bowl of hot rice. If you are in love with seafood, this dish is made for you. This is a dish traditionally made by grilling or roasting the shrimp on banana leaves that are placed on hot charcoals. The shrimp is flavored with local spices and is served hot with steamed rice. The sheer simplicity of the dish is what makes it so comforting to the soul and tasty.

6. Artui chhipchhuan chow

This dish is a sunny side up fried egg that is served with Noodles. It tastes delicious when served hot with coriander leaves.

7. Chhangban

This is sticky local rice bread that can be consumed in Lunch along with vegetables or sauces.
